Why Clothing Repair is the Next Big Thing in Sustainable Fashion (And How It’s Changing Lives)

On the first season of The Spin Out podcast, I sat down with Owen Parry, the founder of Hello Tailr, a Melbourne-based fashion-tech startup that is completely changing the game for clothing repairs and alterations. If you’ve ever ordered a pair of pants online only to realise they are dragging on the floor, you are going to love this story.

The Birth of Hello Tailr: From Personal Frustration to Innovation

Like many great business ideas, Hello Tailr was born out of pure, relatable frustration. Owen found himself moving suburbs and needing a pair of new online pants shortened. When he searched online for local options, nothing convenient came up. Everything required driving 15 minutes to a busy shopping centre with limited weekend hours.

Coming from a tech background, having previously founded and successfully scaled the restaurant booking platform, OB, Owen realised the garment alteration industry was stuck in the past.

"I was just surprised that the alterations industry wasn’t online at all," Owen shared during our chat. "I keep coming back to the customer who doesn’t know anything about sewing. How can we describe it in a way that just makes sense?"

So, he built a bridge between skilled makers and people looking for a convenient experience. Through Hello Tailr, you simply type in your measurements, complete your order, print a shipping label, and pop your clothes in a red street mailing box. It’s that easy.

More Than a Service: Empowering Social Enterprises

What makes Hello Tailr truly special isn't just the slick technology, it’s the heart behind the operations. Over 72% of the brand's services are completed by social enterprise partners.

Hello Tailr partners with incredible organizations like Second Stitch in Coburg, The Social Studio in Collingwood, and The Social Outfit in New South Wales. These entities do three amazing things:

  • Local manufacturing for slow fashion brands.

  • Providing fashion and design training certificates for new migrants and individuals facing barriers to employment.

  • Alterations and mending.

Before Hello Tailr, these localised studios struggled to handle long-distance requests due to the time-consuming nature of emailing customers back and forth. By wrapping his platform's tech around their operations, Owen has unlocked a nationwide market for them.

Even better, it creates a sustainable ecosystem. Students graduating from these design courses now have a direct pathway into steady, paid workforce experience doing everyday alterations.

Fighting the Fast Fashion Crisis

We all know fast fashion is a problem, but the numbers are staggering. Fashion is the second biggest polluting industry behind oil and gas. From the logistics of shipping to the chemical dyes used, the environmental toll is massive.

Because ultra-fast fashion has made buying new clothes so cheap, we've collectively lost the habit of repairing what we have. Owen’s mission is to tackle this by making mending just as easy as clicking "Add to Cart".

Whether it's sewing creative love-heart knee patches on school pants or re-attaching a button you don't have the time or skills to fix yourself, keeping garments in circulation is the ultimate goal.

Owen’s ultimate "zero-to-one" vision is to change how we view clothing care completely. Hello Tailr is currently working with boutique labels and major online retailers to integrate an alteration option directly at the point of purchase. Imagine receiving an email the day your new jeans arrive saying, "Too long? Click here to send them straight to a social enterprise tailor."

At The Laundry Lady, we are all about giving you your time back and making life easier, which is why we are so excited to partner with Hello Tailr! Our Laundry Partners are busy washing, drying, and ironing, so being able to point our clients toward a sustainable mending service is a total no-brainer.

Let's stop throwing away perfectly good clothes and start mending our way to a more circular future.
